A small amount of scientific studies were found on petitgrain essential oil. One human study implied that the inhalation may help improve work performance. High in linalyl acetate and linalool, the essential oil may also have antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-cancer, wound healing, and anxiolytic potential. More research is needed. Petitgrain oil is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of an orange tree, usually bitter orange, and sometimes from a lemon tree. Aroma is woody, herb-like, and slightly citrusy.
